As alcohol is the major cause of road deaths in France, beginning July 1, 2012, all drivers (motocyclists, foreign visitors, and tourists alike) will have to carry a balloon-type breathalyser in their vehicles. Anyone not carrying a breath test kit will be fined €11. The new law will not be enforced until November 1, to give drivers a grace period, and scooters under 50cc are exempt.
